Strategy of the Month: PrAACtical Exercise: Building Fluency with Decontextualized PrAACtice

In most situations, communication teaching must be steeped in a meaningful context. SLPs build their plans for teaching new concepts or communicative intents around things that are relevant and important to the AAC learner. How do you teach ‘more’ without something the learner wants more of? How do you teach ‘fast’ without making something zip around? It just wouldn’t work. We get the role of context and have written many posts emphasizing the central part it must play in AAC intervention. Is there are prAACtical place for therapy activities that are NOT embedded in a rich semantic context? We think so. Mining everyday routines at home, in school, and in therapy sessions for communication teaching opportunities is a great way to get started in boosting the effectiveness of AAC intervention. We are inspired when we see clinicians enhance their clients’ learning by making subtle, but important changes. – I was thrilled to hear one SLP talk about how she ‘found’ more AAC practice for a teenager by offering more choices in her therapy games. Once he chose a TV character for the activity, LeVon then had to specify what action he/she would do (e.g., dance, drive, clap) and a location in which to do it (e.g., home, school, beach). 5 Apps for Tempting Commenting & Other Language

  Temptation can be hard but when we tempt for commenting- we don’t want to hold back.  With that in mind, we thought about some comment tempting apps.  We found many great free or close to free apps  that are very likely to tempt commenting from everyone who plays.  Commenting, by definition, is a social reason to communicate.  So be sure to ‘app together’ when the purpose of app play is to ‘tempt’ commenting. Go Ape! 10 Commenting Communication Temptations

More About Communication Opportunities: It doesn’t matter your personality, but for students who do not naturally comment, you need to go ape!  And then still, you need to teach with wait & signal cues, visual supports, aided language input, modeling, expansions, and positive feedback.  We will never forget a semester with Mikey and our hair clips of butterflies, whales, dinosaurs, and even a spider. These hair clips allowed for the item to hang in our face…… until Mikey commented and we could ‘go ape’ with surprise. A great strategy to use with commenting communication temptations is  Wait & Signal.  Wait and Signal involves setting up the temptation and then pausing with raised eyebrows like you expect the learner to take a ‘turn/a conversational turn’. Communication Temptations Really Work

We have been thinking about communication opportunities & temptations for a long time.  We actually think communication temptations are super fun (we promise, we really do have lives).  We are not actors by nature but we can pull off almost anything for a communication temptation.   We will pretend it is hard to open that jar, pretend we didn’t know that it is sooo hot, pretend we didn’t know the gorilla was in the room … at least until the learner lets us know.  But……We still need to go past our acting skills to make communication temptations work.   Here is a our quick 5 step process  for making communication temptations work: Decide on the Goal–  Goals can be anything from specific communication functions (i.e., requesting, protesting, showing off, greeting, commenting, etc.),  semantic concepts (i.e., recurrence, action, attribute, locative, object etc…we need to always think about the goal), or even syntactical... HijAACked! Toca Boca Kitchen Monsters

HijAACked- Toca Boca Kitchen Monsters

  Toca Boca App Developers make general education preschool apps. They are dedicated to providing interactive play opportunities using mobile technology.  We have loved every one of their apps since we first saw them.   There seems to be some philosophical similarities between the Toca Boca Apps and so we will begin with why we love ALL of them.  We have found them to be engaging to all ages (including us).  They also provide practice and interaction with life experiences in a fun and pretend tech way.  We love the beautiful artwork.  We love that they are reasonably priced, often participate in ‘give aways’ and they even do free GIFTS  (think Toca Hair Salon Christmas Gift and now Toca Kitchen Monsters).  We use these apps so often that we can say we have officially HijAACked them for PrAACtical AAC. 5 Quick Steps to Getting Started with the Unconventional Communicator

We know that ALL people communicate. However, when someone has  communication challenges,  their signals may not always be obvious or conventional.  Here is our Quick Step Guide to getting to know about someone’s specific communication.  Using these steps will help facilitate spontaneous communication and move communication along the continuum of conventionality and symbolism.   1.  Observe:   What are they doing that is potentially communicative?  Look for clues in behaviors.  Consider  proximity, persistence, expressions, repetition, intensity, or anything else that might expresses a message.  More ideas from the National Consortium on Deaf-Blindness.
