Those who had the opportunity to attend ISAAC’s Biennial Conference in Toronto undoubtedly left with lots of information and a big dose of inspiration. Let’s keep the momentum for change and growth going as we turn our thoughts to implementing good AAC practices. Godfrey Nazareth’s talk, The Sky is Only the Beginning: Living Life Without Limits, is a great video, both for the information he shares and the way that he shares it. Thanks to the AAC Team at Penn State and the AAC RERC for making this available. Enjoy!

Employment is for Everyone. Work is more than work in that we often define ourselves by what we do, we talk about work, we make friends at work, we share stories about work. That is one of the reasons we are so glad that the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council spends time and effort help supporting work for individuals with disabilities. The Florida Developmental Disabilities Council was established in 1971 and has planned and provided access to individual and family-centered supports for persons with disabilities. Within these activities, a top priority has been employment for adults with developmental disabilities. This video summarizes some of the strategies and approaches that help guide successful employment which leads to greater independence.

Some families are interested in employment opportunities, others in having their now adult children live outside the home with a little or a lot of support, and others just wish there was a place for them to go after school ends. . It is difficult finding quality options. Even if there are options, it seems ‘they’ want the ‘easy’ people. (disclaimer: Now I move from the ‘we’ into the ‘me’ since Carole has been on vacation and I have been dealing with some ‘crap’ and don’t want to speak for Carole since I am hoping she is relaxed and positive). So here goes…. I could argue now that there are no ‘easy’ people. I could rant now because it has been one of those days where not a lot has... [Read More...]

Did you know that March 17, 2012 was National Quilting Day? We didn’t know either until we found out about a great business called Keepsake Quilts. Keepsake Quilts takes your old tee-shirts, those tee-shirts that may have been around for years and are more about the memories then the article of clothing and sews them into a beautiful quilt. And if that isn’t enough to make you love them, it gets even better. This is a nonprofit business with a social mission. The mission is to promote an environment that supports and enhances work skills, interpersonal communication and self-esteem among people who are deaf or hard of hearing. ALl of the employees are deaf or hard of hearing they donate profits to deaf initiatives and deaf youth programs. As we read about the employees, it was interesting to note that a favorite reason for working at Keepsake was that there... [Read More...]
