Whether it is electronically or by postal mail, many of our prAACtical friends are sending and receiving holiday greetings this week. Here are some thoughts on taking advantage of their novelty and using them to build language and literacy skills. Core Vocabulary: Lots of opportunity to practice using core words. Can I have it? I like it. It is fun. Give it to me. Do you want it? I want to see. We can do it (together). I can see it. Do you want to do more? Can you see the ___? Feeling grateful during this holiday season? It’s hard not to get distracted with all the preparations and celebrations but our AAC mission is more important than ever. What prAACtical things are on your agenda? Here are some possibilities. Just for today… I will speak to an AAC learner using the language he/she is working hard to acquire. I will recognize someone for their efforts to support AAC use. I will read something challenging to see how I can apply it to my AAC work. I will mentally dissect my own therapy or teaching to see where I can improve. I will explore a new AAC-related resource. I will share something of value to the AAC community. Throwback Thursday: Teaching Core Vocabulary

While I’m soaking up AAC knowledge at the ASHA Convention, here’s a post from the past. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Among the many changes that the AAC field has experienced in the last decade is the notion that core vocabulary is (or should be) an integral part of any AAC system. We grew to understand the limitations of AAC supports that consist primarily of nouns and descriptors, realizing that those kinds of communication displays restricted our clients to requesting and labeling. Our field realized the inadequacy of providing only prestored messages (e.g., limited the client’s ability to communicate anything novel, not flexible enough to meet most communication needs, etc.). In essence, we realized that without core vocabulary, we were imposing a ceiling on language development. PrAACtical Questions: Does Word Prediction Really Make Communication Faster?

Word prediction is a rate enhancement strategy available in many high tech AAC devices. Which of the following is true about word prediction in longer words? It always saves time. It always saves time and keystrokes. It always saves keystrokes, and sometimes saves time. It always saves time, and sometimes saves keystrokes. It never saves time. In longer words, word prediction always saves keystrokes because the user is inputting only a portion of the word. This is helpful in that it reduces fatigue. It can also save time for some users, but that is not always the case. Some users have difficulty shifting back and forth between inputting letters and reviewing the options that are predicted by the device or computer. This slows the communication process.
