This month’s ‘Strategy of the Month’ has been focused on supporting families. To fully support families, it is essential to provide family friendly resources that can aid in creating Personal Learning Networks (PLN’s). The more families know and learn, the more likely the AAC learner will progress in their communication skills. Also, the more information families have, the better advocates they will become. And since families are one of the only constants in an AAC learner’s educational and life journey, the family is really the most important part the communication team. Last week, we were delighted to have a post by Dr. Joan Murphy about a research-based approach called Talking Mats. We’ve shared about Talking Mats in a video and on our Facebook page, but we needed to call on the experts to go into more detail about this approach. Thankfully, the co-directors of this project, Dr. Joan Murphy and Lois Cameron, were willing to collaborate. in this post, Dr. Murphy shares her knowledge with us. We were in a classroom awhile back, supporting a little fellow in circle time, and it just felt like something was missing. Engaging materials and activities? There seemed to be plenty. Schedule? Nope, those were in plain view. Communication devices? They were all within reach of the children who used them. As we watched the teachers and kids interacting, it seemed like something got forgotten. Then it hit us – song boards! We used to see large visual displays, like this wonderful one made many years ago by a fantastic young clinician, that had fun, interactive elements. We love songboards because they help the children focus and give us added material for building communication opportunities. We’re not sure why songboards aren’t in as many classrooms as they used to be, since they are so helpful in keeping children engaged. – Do you have favorite sources for songboards? Please share so... We love active participation for communication and language learning. Actually, we love active participation in all areas of life for us, for our students, for everyone. When Carole introduced the Building Participation Strategy of the Month, she discussed the role of the Participation Model (Beukelman & Mirenda, 1988; 2013). The Participation Model is a framework for understanding the barriers to participation and then from a prAACtical intervention standpoint developing strategies and activities to increase active participation in a variety of (ALL) aspects of life. For the 2012 AAC Awareness Month, we discussed barriers to participation.
