This month we’re focusing on visual schedules. Some of our AAC friends have had great success with object schedules, so we’re a little surprised that more people don’t use them. Here’s a nice video on the strategy from the wonderful team at OCALI.

We love strategies that work for everyone and visual schedules certainly fall into that category. Although the my planner might look different from the ones used by kids in our AAC preschool, the purposes are quite similar. This video from Kids Included Together (KIT) project at the National Training Center on Inclusion makes that point well. Watch for the nice examples of schedules using pictures and objects.

This week’s video features Gail Van Tatenhove doing part of a lesson on disaster preparedness, something we take pretty seriously in Florida during hurricane season. In this short clip, Gail is modeling on a large AAC language board/poster. She is working with a small group of adults who use SGDs and they are using core words to talk about the concept of ‘an emergency.’

Refrigerator Mothers is a look back to the 1950’s-60’s at the devastating experience that families of children with autism had during an era when medical professionals attributed the cause of ASD to poor mothering. It follows the stories of several American mothers and their adult children who were challenged by autism but traumatized by the professionals whose help they sought. – Surely we know better than this, right? Some days, no matter how hard you’ve worked, there seems to more to do. Some days, no matter how great your intentions, things just don’t work out as planned. On those days, we just have to lift each other up. Elgar, this one’s for you. And for all the Sigur Ros devotees.

We can’t resist sharing this video, posted by Communication Matters, the UK chapter of ISAAC. There have been many Cinderella remakes, but this is our favorite. And they did it with only one rehearsal. Hollywood would love to know your secret! –
