Video of the Week: AAC in the Classroom for Students with Significant Disabilities
A- A+

Most classrooms that include children with the most significant disabilities are comfortable with low tech AT and use it frequently throughout the day. In today’s video, AT consultant Kelly Fonner, discusses strategies for maximizing the use of those technologies and progressing to more advanced communicative options. A frequent presenter at international, national, and state conferences, Kelly shares ideas for taking what already works in these classrooms and moving to the next level. As always, she provides clear explanations, rationales, and the all-important ‘how-to’ for implementing additional strategies and technologies.

Many thanks to Kelly and AbleNet University for making this video available.

Hi Carol! thnx so much 4 featuring the 1st video of 3 part series of strategies from CEP: the Communication Enhancement Process. It’s certainly not just my work. Since 2008 I’ve had a great time working with the excellent consultants from the Oakland Schools Intermediate District in Michigan developing these strategies. They’ve been used with hundreds of SLPs, Teachers and ParaProfessionals in teams serving students with Complex Communication Needs in a variety of settings from full inclusion to self-contained classrooms. These same strategies have been replicated in classrooms in Eastern Ohio SST areas 2, 3, 8 & 9, as well as in districts in the states of Illinois, Maryland and Wisconsin; I just want people watching 2 know that if they have any questions, they can contact me at my new email ksfonner@gmail.com.
