For individuals with complex communication needs who have motor limitations, access to AAC can be elusive. In today’s featured video, we learn from OT Carrie Luse who co-directs the AT Lab at Community Vision. In this archived presentation from the Wyoming ECHO Project, Carrie helps us understand the options for physically accessing AAC systems and explains ways that we can help AAC learners be successful. There are a number of helpful handouts for this webinar that you can access here. We’re grateful to Carrie and the University of Wyoming ECHO Project for creating this presentation and making it freely available. Last week’s ATIA Conference in Orlando was packed with AAC energy, excitement about tools, and enthusiasm for learning ways in which professionals are supporting AAC learners at home, in school, and in the community. We’ll be sharing takeaways from that event over the next few weeks. Here are a couple of resources and handouts on access, professional development, and accessibility to get you started. The Access Learning Process (ALP) for AAC introduced a wonderful framework for supporting AAC learners who use alternative access. Power Up Your Professional Development with AT Focused Social Media Creating Inclusive Classrooms with Microsoft Accessibility Did you attend a session or learn about an AAC resource that needs to be shared? We’d love to hear about it.

Today, we go back to the resources at PaTTAN, this time to learn about switches from OT Karen Kangas. These two videos are from a full day workshop, which is a lot to get through, but if you need information on this topic, this is a great resource. You can view Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

If you’re like most SLPs, you didn’t learn a lot about teaching clients to use alternative access in your graduate program. This resource document from the ACE Centre North provides a great overview of switch skills and includes a number of prAACtical intervention tips. Take a look!
