One of the challenging things about teaching graduate student SLPs to do AAC assessments is that there is no single, comprehensive protocol to cover the needs of all types of clients. We’ve started a collection of forms and thought some of you might find them helpful. If you know of others, please get in touch so we can add to the list. That way we’ll have them all in one place.

Since my SLP is not too keen on helping me get AAC devices for my non-verbal students, am I qualified as a teacher to do some of these assessments with my students and present results to the IEP team?
Denise, I am so sorry to hear that the SLP is not enthusiastic about AAC devices for your nonverbal students. What a shame! Many of them are designed for teams or AT specialists, not SLPs specfically. There is a real range of tools here and I think you would feel comfortable with most of them. If not, it is a perfect opportunity to bring the SLP into the conversation. Knowing that you are inviting her into the process, but also that you are prepared to move forward one way or another may help her move forward with this. In the end, we advocate for whatever is best for the student. As much as I hate to admit it, we SLPs often aren’t the ones out in front on this.

Hi Dr Zangari! I took your class when I completed my MS at Nova! I’m very interested in developing AAC eval/tx materials for Spanish/bilingual individuals. Would you be available to share resources/insight on this topic. Unfortunately, I’ve found this tobeva very uunderserved area and have been doing so much of the materials/research on this by myself.I’d love to make resources that would be most beneficial…I can’tbe the only one struggling to find appropriate materials. :/ Help!

AACreport.com is an online report writing system created to simplify the complex and redundant process of writing an Augmentative and Alternative (AAC) Evaluation or Speech Generating Device (SGD) funding report. We are gradually adding state level funding forms so when the report is finished many of the associated forms (Prescription, Trial Summary, Quote Request) are automatically completed. It is our hope that the site will encourage SLPs to enter this rewarding but challenging specialty. The site focuses on essential and common requirements for state and federal funding sources. The first thing I appreciated was the clear communication from the NDIS team. They provided a detailed overview of what to expect during the assessment, which helped alleviate some of my initial concerns.
