Holidays and special occasions are a great time to put communication into AACtion. Since it’s prAACtically Father’s Day, we’re sharing some ideas and materials that may be of interest. Set the stage for success by reading a social narrative about Father’s Day in the week leading up to the holiday. This example from Emily’s World will get you started. Use Talking to Dad Visual Supports/Worksheets by Joel Shaul at Autism Teaching Strategies to create meaningful conversations. Read some books that feature special things about fathers. Jessa is learning to use an AAC app that is rich in core vocabulary. Despite dual diagnoses of autism and Down Syndrome, she’s picking it up quite well. Jessa’s not very keen on coming to therapy, though, and often puts her head down on the table to avoid engagement. Matthew goes with the flow. With more than a decade of therapy under his belt, he’s “learned to comply” and will generally follow directions that are given to him. For the most part, though, he seems to use his AAC because the adults want him to. Interaction using his AAC system doesn’t seem to bring Matthew much satisfaction. Kristina is a pretty proficient AAC user. Most people don’t realize that, though, because she tends to communicate in single words or short sentences. Wildfires, tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and other disasters can have a devastating impact on anyone but people who use AAC are particularly vulnerable. It never seems like it could happen to us until it does. Here in the US, it seems like hardly a week goes by without news of another destructive event that upends a community. Even with the best emergency preparation, people who use AAC can find themselves without a functioning communication device after these catastrophic events. Fortunately, USSAAC’s AAC Disaster Relief Committee is able to provide assistance to those whose communication systems get lost or damaged in a hurricane, flood, wildfire, or other major disasters. We can’t predict when disaster will strike but we can prepare. Please take a moment to bookmark this post for future use.
