Visual supports are a standard of care for supporting people with autism at home, in school, at work, and in the community. When your child has little or no functional speech, it is tempting to jump right into purchasing AAC technology and get started with therapy and instruction. Usually, though, it helps to slow down just a bit. Families who are new to this journey may not realize that the best way to get started is with a good AAC assessment, and, thus, will not know to advocate for that at school or with private service providers. In today’s featured video, Dr. Jill Senner explains the rationale for starting with an AAC assessment and provides an overview of the process. Enjoy! For AAC learners, one of the most important things we can do to facilitate communication and language growth is to ensure the presence of supportive strategies throughout the school day. Today, we turn to Project ACCESS, from the Florida Department of Education, to learn more about a tool that we can use to analyze key elements of the communication environment. The Design to Learn Environmental Inventory was created by Dr. Charity Rowland (see also the Communication Matrix) and Philip Schweigert. What better way to start the day than to see how AAC Awareness Month is being celebrated in a school system?! Today, pediatric SLP Elisa Parker tells us how they do it in the school district where she works. For the past 20 years, Elisa has served young children in the Park Hill School District in Kansas City, Missouri. Her passion for AAC and children with autism led to her becoming an Autism Coach and Assistive Technology Facilitator. She has been an Autism Coach for the Gerner Family Early Education Center for 7 years and the Assistive Technology Facilitator for 3 years.
