On the first Friday of each month, we publish a post in Spanish by guest author Claudia Marimón to highlight AAC work being done in Spanish-speaking countries and offer translations of material that can help families and service providers. En este mes de abril queremos compartir con nuestra comunidad este valioso recurso:

La Guía de Comunicación Aumentativa y Alternativa (CAA) es un material gratuito elaborado en colaboración por ISAAC Brasil y la Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz). 

Este recurso fue diseñado originalmente en portugués y posteriormente traducido al español para beneficiar a la comunidad hispanohablante. Su objetivo principal es favorecer el acceso a información clave sobre derechos, conceptos básicos y la implementación de sistemas de CAA.

Contenido principal de la guía                                     

La guía aborda los fundamentos necesarios para entender y aplicar la CAA en diversos contextos:

• Conceptos básicos: Define qué es la CAA como un conjunto de herramientas y estrategias (gestos, símbolos, dispositivos tecnológicos) que permiten a personas con dificultades de comunicación expresar sus pensamientos y necesidades.
• Derechos de comunicación: Enfatiza que la comunicación es un derecho humano fundamental y promueve la integración social de personas con discapacidad.
• Sistemas con y sin ayuda: Explica la diferencia entre recursos que no requieren equipos externos (como el lenguaje de señas o gestos) y aquellos que sí los requieren (como tableros de pictogramas o comunicadores electrónicos).
• Población objetivo: Detalla cómo estos sistemas benefician a personas con autismo, parálisis cerebral, desafíos cognitivas o condiciones neurodegenerativas.

This April, we would like to share this valuable resource with our community.

The Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Guide is a free resource developed collaboratively by ISAAC Brazil (International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz).

This material was originally created in Portuguese and later translated into Spanish to benefit the Spanish-speaking community. Its main goal is to promote access to key information on rights, basic concepts, and the implementation of AAC systems.

Main Content of the Guide

The guide covers essential foundations for understanding and applying AAC across different contexts:

• Basic concepts: Defines AAC as a set of tools and strategies (such as gestures, symbols, and technological devices) that enable individuals with communication difficulties to express their thoughts and needs.
• Communication rights: Emphasizes that communication is a fundamental human right and promotes the social inclusion of people with disabilities.
• Aided and unaided systems: Explains the difference between resources that do not require external equipment (such as sign language or gestures) and those that do (such as communication boards with pictograms or electronic speech-generating devices).
• Target population: Describes how these systems benefit individuals with autism, cerebral palsy, cognitive challenges, or neurodegenerative conditions.
