We’re making progress in teaching our little AAC learners. We know the pedagogy and evidence-based strategies. But we still have to figure out how to plan engaging instructional sessions with specific activities and materials. While we like to get kids moving and interacting with toys and other playthings, sometimes we also include play and interaction using educational and recreational apps. But which ones? In today’s featured video, SLP Betsy Furler shares some of her favorites. This video was part of the 2017 AAC in the Cloud Conference and we are grateful to them for making it available. If you liked this and other videos from AAC in the Cloud, you may want to participate in the 2018 AAC in the Cloud Conference this June. Stay tuned for details!

How can we help people who use AAC to develop their leadership skills? One way is to give them models of successful leaders who use augmentative communication technology. In today’s post, we hear from India Ochs, an attorney and advocate who uses AAC, and her son, Jack. They talk about the ways that each of us can become leaders in everyday situations and offer suggestions for how to inspire others to lead. The presentation is part of the ISAAC webinar series. You can learn more about ISAAC here. Enjoy! Many thanks to ISAAC for hosting this session and making it available for us to learn from. In today’s post, we share a number of videos by the wonderful team at Communicare in Massachusetts. In these videos, they demonstrate how to read the same book and adjust the goals, aided language input, comments, and questions for AAC learners at 6 different stages of language development. Many thanks to this wonderful team for making these videos and sharing them publicly. You can learn more from Nerissa Hall and Hillary Jellison here.

As we all know, AAC learners need to use their augmentative tools and strategies to do more than ask for the things they want to do or have. But it can be tricky to figure out how to build competency with more social communicative functions. In today’s featured video, Matthew Baud and Dr. Jill Senner, of the Technology and Language Center, discuss some of the issues involved in expanding the pragmatic profiles of our AAC learners. They also demonstrate specialized social pages in some AAC systems. Handouts can be obtained from the TALC website or the link below. Download the handout here. You can learn more about pragmatic intervention from Matthew and Jill here. Direct Link to Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGLiJRXXM88&t=1762s

When you’ve worked with one person with autism, the saying goes, you’ve worked with one person with autism. It shouldn’t surprise us, then, that this diversity shows up in research data as well. In this presentation, we hear from Dr. David Trembath, from Griffith University in Australia, explores the individual differences in AAC research and discusses their implications. Many thanks to the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and Collaboration in Autism (CIRCA) at the University of British Columbia, for making this video available.
