Video of the Week: AAC & Informed Consent for Participation in Research
When individuals with AAC needs are excluded from research studies, it limits the growth of the knowledge base regarding effective practices in many ways. One barrier to their participation relates to researchers’ limited understanding of ethical and practical ways to inform people with complex communication needs about the risks and potential benefits of particular research studies and obtain their consent to participate, should they choose to do so. Today’s video features the work of doctoral student and SLP Jacinta Pennacchia from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the University of Melbourne who explores the issues and discusses ways to address these barriers.
Many thanks to Jacinta, the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the University of Melbourne for this presentation.
