Before-During-After Strategy
Having AAC available during all activities is ideal, but at the pool, beach, or in the snow, it can be justifiably difficult to incorporate. A before-during-after strategy allows you to capitalize on language opportunities with AAC to talk about what will happen before an event or activity and discuss what did happen afterward. Keeping durable AAC within arms reach is great, but if you are too caught up in the moment, you have multiple opportunities to talk about the activity while taking off the pressure so you can focus on fun.

Language Walk Through – Wet & Messy Activities
A language walkthrough involves being intentional about thinking through and anticipating language opportunities for an activity. It is important to consider the beginning, middle, and end of the activity, as well as opportunities for requesting, commenting, describing, and sharing information. This video focuses on using AAC during wet, messy, and sandy activities when technology-based AAC may not be the best option. In addition to reviewing words and phrases, customizing paper-based AAC with activity-specific vocabulary is discussed.
