Stepping into AAC-Week 14

About This Week

Welcome to Week 14! Reading takes center stage for a second week of our Stepping into AAC journey.

You will explore the following concepts this week:

  • Descriptive Talking: This important strategy helps promote engagement and language learning without pressuring the AAC learner to ‘perform’ or respond.
  • Questions & AAC: We ask AAC users a ton of questions, and that can be counterproductive.  Learn about the pitfalls of question-asking and what to do instead.
  • Language Walk-Through – Informational Texts: Join us as we use AAC to read books that are informational and see how to build interactions around this type of material.
  • Make Your Own Books: Even if you never had dreams of being an author, we hope to tempt you into making some personalized books for your AAC learner. It’s fun and easier than you think!

Descriptive Talking

Descriptive language is a modeling AAC technique that uses describing words to explain and inform. It enables AAC learners to talk about new concepts and situations using the words available to them. Descriptive teaching contrasts with referential teaching, which seeks specific answers.

Informational Text – A Walkthrough

Exploring informational texts with AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) allows learners to engage with real topics and personal interests. Informational texts come in various forms like picture books, magazines, websites, and brochures. AAC users can use descriptive language, ask questions, and express opinions while exploring these texts.
