Making Space for AAC

Supporting AAC learners in embedding AAC across daily activities is a valid and important challenge. Creating immersive language learning experiences with AAC is crucial. Making space for AAC throughout the day can be more realistic and successful than finding dedicated time. Making space for AAC may feel awkward at first, but it ultimately makes supporting AAC learners easier and demonstrates the value of AAC.

Language Walk Through – Getting Dressed

A language walkthrough involves being intentional about thinking through and anticipating language opportunities for a task. It is important to consider the beginning, middle, and end of the task, as well as opportunities for requesting, commenting, describing, and sharing information. This video focuses on the daily routine of getting dressed.

Self-Determination

Self-determination is the key to intrinsic motivation, and understanding it helps us become better communication partners. It involves the innate needs for autonomy, belonging, and competence. Applying the principles of self-determination enhances our role as advocates, promotes natural and respectful engagement, and empowers AAC learners to be decision-makers in their lives.
