PráctiCAAmente Conectados: CAA Con Links – Junio 2024

Happy June, CAA friends! Each month, we feature a Spanish version of our AAC Link Up called CAA con Links. If you have AAC-related announcements, materials, or videos in Spanish that you would like others to know about, we’d love to have you add that information below. Also, please share this with anyone who might be interested in contributing to or using the materials that get added to these posts. You’ll find the place to add that information at the very bottom of this post.

Claudia Marimón organizes these monthly posts, which feature AAC work being done in Spanish-speaking countries and offer translations of material that can help families and service providers. In today’s post, Claudia shares the experiences of Samuel, a young AAC user who traveled to Mexico to participate in an international spelling competition. He did a wonderful job and raised awareness of AAC for many people.

Bienvenido Junio,  queremos compartir con la comunidad hispanohablante que estamos muy felices y orgullosos  de Samuel, de Costa Rica por su participación en la competencia internacional de Deletreo en Guadalajara México. Es la primera vez que un usuario de CAA, participa en un evento como ese.

Carolina, su mamá nos comparte como fue la experiencia “Amco Sumit 2024 abre por primera vez las puertas a la participación de un estudiante usuario de CAA.  Un evento que reunió a más de 1000 participantes de Spelling bee en seis niveles educativos.

Como mamá me siento súper agradecida ya que la logística sobrepasó todas nuestras expectativas; fue maravilloso como todos esperaban a Samuel, se dirigieron a él para hablarle, escucharle y compartir con él

Adaptaron una rampa para su silla de ruedas,  el sistema de audio para escuchar mejor su comunicador.

Algo que me encantó fue ver a los niños acercarse a conversar con él y a preguntarle de dónde era, cómo iba a deletrear y esperar sus respuestas y a Sami preguntarles el nombre e interactuar.

Cuando llegó el turno de Sami de deletrear le tocó una palabra que ya varios chicos habían fallado y como parte del concurso no se pasa a otra palabra hasta que alguien la deletrea y cuando Sami lo hizo todos lo aplaudieron.

Estar ahí ha sido un desafío  ganado y sentimos que es la oportunidad para que próximos años Samuel no sea el único participante con necesidades complejas de comunicación.”

Personalmente creo que es una gran oportunidad de que muchas personas conozcan el poder de la CAA.

Gracias a todos los que apoyaron a Samuel para llegar a México.

Welcome June, we want to share with the Spanish-speaking community that we are very happy and proud of Samuel, from Costa Rica for his participation in the international Spelling Competition in Guadalajara Mexico. It is the first time that an AAC user participates in an event like that.

Carolina, her mother, shares with us what the experience was like “Amco Sumit 2024 opens the doors for the first time to the participation of a student AAC user.  An event that brought together more than 1000 Spelling bee participants at six educational levels.

As a mother I feel super grateful since the logistics exceeded all our expectations; It was wonderful how everyone was waiting for Samuel. They went to him to talk to him, listen to him and share with him

They adapted a ramp for his wheelchair, the audio system to better hear his communicator.

Something that I loved was seeing the children come up to talk to him and ask him where he was from and how he was going to spell and wait for his answers, and Sami asked them their names and interacted.

When it was Sami’s turn to spell, he got a word that several kids had already missed and as part of the contest they don’t move on to another word until someone spells it and when Sami did it everyone applauded him.

Being there has been a challenge won and we feel that it is the opportunity so that in the coming years Samuel will not be the only participant with complex communication needs”

Personally, I think it is a great opportunity for many people to know the power of AAC.
