  • Hello Carole,

Thank you for all your practical methods and ideas regarding AAC. I have been a SLP for 30+ years and in the last few years I have taken on the responsibility of assessing and providing AAC interventions for students that I serve in LA county, CA.

I have a student who has cognitive abilities of a 4-5 year old child, has a CA of 18 years, and has a progressive, degenerative neuro-muscular disease (Freidrich’s syndrome) that causes her to be wheel-chair bound with no viable means (currently) to express her ideas.

Last Friday I collaborated with her educational team and we found that she is able to access a 32 picture/icon AAC device (from Enabling Devices- 6 level communication builder- no longer made, similar to the 7 level communication builder) via direct selection with her right index finger.

I have an iPad with Touch Chat HD from Saltillo, as well as Go Talk Now and Proloquo 2 Go apps on it. Do you know if there are grids that can be used with an iPad (the larger, 10 inch screen)? I would like to try these apps with her but she would need a grid to help her accurately access the icons she wants for communication purposes via her index finger.

Thank you for your time and consideration and I wish you and your family a wonderful Holiday season!

    Warm regards,
    Kathryn George

Hey Kathryn, sounds like you are on a mission to help this young lady! 🙂 The keyguards that might work for you are by Lasered Pics. If they don’t have the specific one you are looking for, they can do a custom one. Not very expensive, either. 🙂 Here is the link: http://www.laseredpics.biz/keyguards-for-ipads/ .
